Martin Luther King Jr. Presbyterian Church of Neptune has its roots in the Calvary Presbyterian Church which convened in the Monmouth County area from 1901 until 1971. Founded in 1901 as the Calvary Presbyterian Church, the church underwent a name change after a church development study in 1971. Because of the assassination of Dr. King, the church development committee recommended changing the name to the Martin Luther King Jr. Presbyterian Church.
As a result of the study, the new church development proposal was published in late fall of 1970. It was designed to produce a renaissance within the Black community of Asbury Park-Neptune New Jersey, which would through an orderly organized, non-violent, educational process move people from a state of apathy, ignorance, despair and powerlessness to a position of voice, interest, adn industry within the larger society.
The project would, by its very nature, attempt to redefine the congregation's mission and its concern for upgrading the quality of life within the community. The name was officially adopted on May 27, 1973. Two buildings preceded the beautiful facility that we currently worship in. The groundbreaking ceremonies for the Fellowship Hall were held on March 27th 1983, the Dedication ceremonies were conducted on November 24th 1985. The church was paid in full in 2013.
Martin Luther King Jr. Presbyterian Church is a part of the historic legacy of the Civil and Human Rights movements. Our mission is to develop discipleship to Christ in Spirit and Truth and to be led by example - going beyond the doors of the church into the community and beyond.
Our Ministry
We believe in God the father - maker of heaven and earth - and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. 0). In addition, we believe that the words of Matthew 16:18 are right when they read (in part) "upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." We are committed to evangelism and discipleship and take The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) seriously. Our church's namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. modeled an embodied theology that put faith into action towards building the beloved community. We therefore reject comfortable Christianity, and instead choose to challenge the status quo until the day that Christ's perfect work is completed.
